#CollegeAffordability, some words: When #TexasPublic colleges & universities gap #lowincome students $10,742/year (and tout their "affordable" in-state tuition, they are asking for 17-36% of a family's income. REF: This would be the income for a HS teacher in TX (& less).
When #TexasPrivate universities gap these same #lowincome students $21,947/year (while talking about #collegeaccess...), they are asking families for 35-73% of this family's income.
When people say "but #freecollege," most of the time, they are talking about the #PellGrant paying for community college. Then I ask you - who gets to graduate and where do they go? Is it the most vulnerable students who are relying on education as economic mobility?
We have got to start putting numbers on the #collegeaffordability problem so people understand how far there is to go. Today we asked reps to #DoublePell, which would get closer to covering in-state tuition in TX, freeing up state aid to pay for room/board/books/etc.
Expecting low income students to take on $40k in debt for an undergraduate education isn't only next to impossible, but it also inhibits them from being able to attend graduate school or pursue careers in public service. When are we going to have the real conversation about this
