Wondering about work/earning money. It’s concerning. Next year I have a tour in sept/Oct. that’s far off! Is the answer to be better at working online? Sign up to Patreon or the like? Get a “real” job? I’m not sure? The “real” job option seems the only way to pay bills! 🤦‍♂️
.....Making albums without gigs and touring, doesn’t pay bills! Shifting Merch....Cds, books, Ts etc is uncertain and fluctuates too much. When folk have things, you need to find new folk to buy. How do you do this without gigs? Adapting to doing everything online isn’t for all!
....People find it massively daunting having to learn skills they thought they’d never need. I suppose it’s a good thing. It takes time to learn. When you’re learning, you’re not earning.
.....Live streaming gigs? It’s a thing. It removes the element of real connection......the reason we play gigs. I have one coming up and I’m hoping it’s mostly a positive experience. I hope that it doesn’t push me ever closer to the “real” job option.
......Music as hobby! Never considered that. An enjoyable wee side line! Dunno if that’s for me. Is it all or nothing?! Who knows. The thought of not having a clear way forward, is daunting!
....At the minute I do tune commissions. That comes and goes. I sell Merch....that comes and goes. Teaching was never my focus. I enjoy my small amount of RCS teaching but that’s gone. Are we to pushed into something that we’re not passionate about? Just to earn money?!
I DUNNO! Just thinking! Just thinking!
....There r things about the current situation that have been positive. But fundamentally, it is necessary 2 earn & provide. Giving me the price of a cup of coffee a month is ok when you have a fan base of thousands. You can live off that. Most musicians don’t have that support
Just thinking! Just thinking! ........
.....Wondering hiw other folk/musicians are feeling about the not so distant future? How does everyone feel about continuing to work the way we’ve had to be working? It can be stressful and absolutely uncertain.
The hole in the heart is the lack of true connection. The feeling that motivates us to continue playing music, to write new material, to invest in what we do. It’s what some of us are made for! This situation, not of all of us were built for this.
....I’ve noticed a lot of musicians feeling extreme pressure to motivated. It’s difficult observing folk that find it easy to adapt to the situation. A lot of pressure to be creative, to release stuff, to be highly motivated. It doesn’t work for everyone.......
....perhaps because the thing that inspires us the most, the thing that drives us forward, has been taken away!
.....CONNECTION.
......CONNECTION is our engine. It propels us. It’s the seed of our whole infrastructure. Ultimately it leads to us being able to earn money doing the thing that we love the most!
MOTIVATION is tough. People struggling with motivation because of the lack of the thing that motivates us. Just thinking! This is a “Just thinking” thread!
I know we live in a world where there is always someone worse off. These are difficult times for all! Still we as individuals and as a community must think of ourselves in this instance. We all have responsibilities. We have families and bills to pay.
