Thread: A few months ago at age 34 I was diagnosed with ADHD. I was always creative, outgoing, spontaneous and “funny”, but I was also squirrelly, forgetful & disorganized. My whole life I have never been good at taking notes and HATED paper work. I always thought I was “type B”.
When Covid hit and I was out of a regular routine, I started noticing things more and more. I had literally 3 commitments in a month and I forgot to do all of them. A female friend posted an article about adult ADHD and it was exactly what I was experiencing.
When I went to talk to someone the first question he asked was if I get a lot of speeding tickets and parking tickets. And I did. A LOT. It apparently is a classic sign of innattention and the lack of ability to focus. It was also very expensive.
Background noise has always driven me nuts. Pens tapping, whispering, my kids goofing off, keyboard typing, phones ringing. If there’s something going on in the background that’s all I was able to focus on. The struggle was real, but I thought it was like that for everyone.
Let me tell you, receiving the diagnoses was a GAMECHANGER. Completely changed my life and how I operate. I started taking medication that has drastically improved how I function. It’s night and day. I’m no longer irritable and snapping at my kids for making noise and being kids.
I can do things without getting sidetracked, even mundane tasks I’ve never enjoyed. I’m writing this because I think there are so many women out there experiencing the same thing. We often have a huge workload and just chalk our disorganization up to being busy and overwhelmed.
I am not ashamed of it and I think it needs to be talked about more. If you have any questions you can message me and I can try and answer some questions. I’m not an expert on it, but I can tell you my experience and how I got the ball rolling. Thanks for reading!
