The Queen today received the oath of allegiance from the new Archbishop of York during a video call.

The act of newly-appointed Bishops paying “homage” to the Sovereign dates back to Elizabeth I’s reign.

✝️ Normally, new Bishops pay homage to The Queen in person, before they begin their duties.

💻 Today is the first time it has happened virtually.

It acts as the Bishop’s formal acknowledgement of allegiance to the Sovereign, who is the Supreme Governor of Church of England.
👑 Paying homage helps to mark milestones throughout a monarch’s reign.

At The Queen’s Coronation, the Bishops swore to be “faithful and true” to the new Sovereign.

Queen Victoria also received homage at different stages of her life, including on her Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
🌎 As Head of the Nation and Commonwealth, Her Majesty acknowledges and celebrates religious diversity and tolerance.

📸 In 2019, The Queen recognised the vital work of UK faith and belief groups at Buckingham Palace.
