Theory: We're seeing huge surges in child trafficking social media posts not because it's a bad thing (it definitely is) but because people who are uncomfortable acknowledging systemic racism is real (it definitely is) can latch onto an easy outrage. Acknowledging systemic racism
means a need for inner reflection and self-awareness. It requires some hard questions such as "Am I racist?" and "How does white privilege help me?"
Being against human trafficking rarely requires a personal experience to be aghast by it.

It's VERY easy to click share on that Operation Underground Railroad social media post. Admitting human trafficking exists & is bad is super easy & really only requires not raping children to not engage in it. And hey, OUR is Utah based so even easy to virtue signal!!
Admitting systemic racism is real and is bad is harder because it requires (for white people) acknowledging they are mostly unwittingly and unaware of being part of it. It means the admitting the culture we were raised in benefitted us, but hurt others.
That's uncomfortable.
That's uncomfortable.
Latching onto human trafficking as a social justice cause is not a bad thing. It exists and it's horrible.
But it's easy to speak up about - especially if you've never been part of it.
Systemic racism is harder because, for white people, it requires admission of complicity

No one likes to know they've been a part of injustice - even if in large part it's all been unknowingly and unintentionally.
Here's the thing. You can be against human trafficking AND want to work to remove systemic racism.
You can do both!
