Can we please refocus this school reopening debate around tailoring strategies to different problems? For instance, these needs could all be met through different channels:
1. Equitable delivery of learning/enrichment tools
2. Childcare for those who need it
3. Social structure
Childcare needs are driving much demand for reopening schools, but they're easily dismissed due to safety concerns. That doesn't resolve the underlying issue. So what about childcare? What about parents who cannot WFH? Can we isolate this issue and maybe identify more resources?
Also, we've been mostly impressed with our district's handling of COVID-19 challenges (even if we sometimes get frustrated). But we're pretty fortunate. Why are we relying on individual districts to employ whatever strategies they can afford?
