Revivalist evangelicals have been waiting for a third “Great Awakening.” It’s happening, but secular. If Southern evangelicals had chosen Jesus instead of the GOP in the 70s, 80s, & 90s, this Portland protest could’ve been that. Politics killed “witness.”
Evangelicals can be so arrogant. They want to be blame their flatlining numbers (or declines) on everyone else but themselves. You can’t serve God & politics. Evangelicals chose the GOP, not the Kingdom. That’s how they lost their young adults. I explain:
When your own children walk away from the evangelicalism from which you raised them, you’ll need a massive focus on new conversions & church planting to slow the hemorrhaging. “Why don’t our adult kids stay?” is a more important issue for 2020 than any culture war topic.
It’s not “postmodernism,” nor “the culture,” nor CRT that led to the steep declines in numbers since 1993. The beginning of the end of the next awakening, from the Newt G. era on, was the lust for access to power that allowed pastors to become puppets/pawns for GOP politicians.
The “evangelical movement” is dead(like a slow tree death) because it sold out to satisfy its addiction to politics & lost their kids. Churches should care more about catchesis, fatherhood, loving their neighbor locally, serving in local gov’t, etc. than trying to save “America.”
And by “etc.” I mean *all* spheres of society, esp. locally. I’m too much of an “old skool” covenant theologian for evangelicalism I’m afraid. Figure 3.1 is my theology. 😎 This is the WCF + the Three Forms of Unity, not Southern/Mid-Western evangelicalism. #TheCosmosRedeemed
