If a MLB pitcher needs a Tommy John surgery, there are probably 7-8 surgeons who are actually in consideration to do that. However, if an amateur pitcher has a painful elbow, he’s usually sent to the physical therapist a mile from his house, or an in-house athletic trainer. (1/3)
Many of these individuals are extremely prepared to handle the case, but there are also a lot of scenarios where they aren’t; throwing arms are each unique presentations. So, an athlete might be labeled as “failing rehab” when in reality, rehab actually failed him/her. (2/3)
The lesson is to do your homework as you seek out people to help you. And, be willing to travel, when necessary and feasible. It’s very unlikely that the ones that can help you the most are right down the street, especially when we are dealing with a throwing population. (3/3)
