This is an incisive column by @DouthatNYT. Competition with Asians has taken a toll on whites. Many are ready now to disavow hard work & perfectionism through the logic of toxic whiteness. Conveniently, the new antiracism might just keep them on top. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/18/opinion/sunday/white-fragility-meritocracy.html?referringSource=articleShare
It is worth seriously asking: if whites were not getting absolutely creamed by Asian Americans and a growing number of foreign applicants in the battle of all-against-all, would they be so willing to reevaluate the system of merit-based competition?
@DouthatNYT has been delivering some very good analysis of the present moment, don’t sleep. And of course this is subconscious behavior he’s describing, not necessarily explicitly thought out.
Increasingly signing on to arguments reframing reading and math as “white supremacy culture” at just the moment whites no longer dominate in terms of those skills is really quite rich if you think about it for even a minute.
