As someone who works for myself and has a platform from which to speak, I take this privilege very seriously and it IS a privilege. I pride myself on always remaining professional, on building alliances, on being part of bridge that crosses sectors and disciplines 1/5
Why? Because whatever the sector the work is in, it ordinarily has the goal of improvement; of life chances, of prospects, of potential, of relationships. Because I CAN speak out, I have a responsibility to call out when I see harm rather than a strive for 'improvement' 2/5
To not do so lacks authenticity and means that I benefit from my privileges while not seeking to improve things for those who need me to do so. When I do this, it is not a 'witch hunt', or unprofessional, or unsubstantiated. It is not done lightly or thoughtlessly 3/5
I see this as part of my work, integral to creating the change I wish to see. Acknowledging poor practice is about reflection, questioning, observing, humility. I've been in those systems too (on both sides of the fence). Authenticity and integrity are core to where I stand 4/5
I will not be complicit in ignoring harm. I will not tow any party line. I will do all I can, when I can, with the resources that I have. I can't challenge everything and I can't fight every fight but I won't be silenced to benefit ideological positions that harm 5/5
