The Rashtrakutas in Karnataka rose to prominence in Western deccan after the decline of the Badami Chalukyas.They played an important role in the history of the deccan & south India for a period
of two centuries 753 AD to 973 AD.

ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಕೂಟ were of Kannada origin and #Kannada was their mother tongue.
Dantidurga who founded the independent kingdom of the Rashtrakutas in the deccan, by defeating Kirtivarman II the last ruler of the Badami Chalukya dynasty. In the course of time the Rashtrakutas gradually

expanded their kingdom to the whole of Karnataka, Maharashta, MP. shifted their capital to Manyakheta Gulbarga in Karanataka.

Later was continued by Govinda III, defeated the Palas and the Pratiharas and conquered vast areas upto himalayas, including Magadha, Bengal and Lata

Rashtrakuta period saw great developments in art, architecture and literature. Kannada became more prominent as a literary

language with its script and literature showing remarkable growth, dignity and productivity. Court poets and royalty created eminent works in Kannada that spanned such literary forms as prose, poetry, rhetoric, the Hindu epics and the life history of Jain tirthankars.

Amoghavarsha was a great patron of Kannada and Sanskrit. He himself wrote "Kavirajamarga" - the earliest surviving work in kannada language. "Prashnottara Ratnamalika" - a religious work in Sanskrit. Mahaviracharya - the greatest mathematician of the time was at king's court.

He postulated important mathematical theories and axioms. Ganitasarasangraha, a writing in 9 chapters.
The most extensive and sumptuous of the Rashtrakuta works at Ellora is their creation of the monolithic Kailasanath Temple, a splendid achievement confirming the "Balhara"

status as "one among the four principal Kings of the world". A whole temple was conceived from the peak of a mountain and carved downwards! 400,000 tons of stone hand chipped over some 200 years. 7000 sculptors worked tirelessly over 10 generations, to carve the marvellous Temple
