hello @rebeccakschulz, my main criticism of you is your complete denial of economic fact:

every $1 invested in early childhood education returns $6 to $7 back to the economy.

in absolutely *every single place it exists*, universal childcare pays for itself https://twitter.com/rebeccakschulz/status/1285321465970098177
when you say things like “parents who need it most”, what you mean is mothers.

You don’t want to help mothers.

Women disproportionately benefit from universal childcare programs because they are almost always the primary caregivers of children.
Alberta has the highest number of stay at home mothers and the highest gender wage gap in all of Canada.

Alberta consistently ranks as the very worst province for women.

Know why? Because it actually IS the worst province for women!
In places where universal childcare is provided, female participation in the workforce is highest & gender inequality is lowest.

In Quebec, more than 4 out of 5 mothers work — the highest in the country. They have universal childcare.

When women have options, they choose work.
Anyone that says we can’t “afford” universally childcare really means we can’t “afford” gender equality.

They don’t want women participating fully in the workforce because it means women will enjoy increased income and increased representation in positions of power.
Universal childcare would lead to increased income tax revenues at both the provincial $ federal level, increased consumer spending, plus financial security for individuals & families.

Conservatives don’t actually care about the *~*eCoNoMy*~*. They care about holding women back.
But they also care about holding down the poor, because next to increased female participation in the workforce, the second most tangible benefit of universal childcare is reducing the educational readiness gap between poor & rich children.
Children in low income households that have access to quality early childhood education at accredited childcare centres (you got rid of that, didn’t u @rebeccakschulz?) are better prepared for school. Their math, reading, & social abilities are more in line with their rich peers.
Improving school performance of vulnerable children leads to better outcomes: higher self-esteem, better mental health, less likely to become involved with drugs or commit violent crimes later in life.

But of course the @Alberta_UCP KNOWS all this, they just don’t WANT it.
so when anyone says we “just can’t afford universal childcare” remember what they’re really saying is “I hate women & children, I want to see them fail”.

Someday @Twitter will get an edit button so @rebeccakschulz can fix her tweet. In the meantime this thread will have to do.
