tweeting this to remind myself to post a thread with the layman's-terms translations of the research papers on covid im reading for my protest group
here are the papers we are reading today:
1. "Identifying airborne transmission as the dominant route for the spread of COVID-19"
2. "Advice on the use of masks in the context of COVID-19" June 5th 2020, World Health Organization
(contd)
3. "Physical distancing, face masks, and eye protection to
prevent person-to-person transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis"

all documents can be found here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1U4dr_ibu6h0FzNttKnmbJEjgwt6rqaJO?usp=sharing
TLDR the conclusions are very simple:

1. masks work better than any other single plague intervention including social distancing

2. n95 is better than a cloth mask but anything over the nose/mouth is good

3. more fabric layers = better

4. we should also have eye protection
5. transmission is worst indoors but is very possible outdoors as well, especially anywhere humid or stagnant

6. virus density is cumulative. lots of heavy breathing or many people in an area raise the density of viruses in the air. crowded beaches and rivers are plague pits
7. the MOST contagious people are those who are NOT showing symptoms yet. this means you have the highest viral load in your breath and spit BEFORE YOU FEEL SICK. this is why universal masking is absolutely non-negotiable
so covid prevention works along the same lines as the rules of elementary school kids playing cooties: anything someone touches is contaminated (although surface touch transmission isnt as bad as airborne risk), anywhere they sit or stand or talk in is contaminated
rooms they were in are contaminated and contain floating particulate with viruses on them. this effect is worst in dense atmospheres with high humidity or even smog because viruses can also ride on other little bits of things. probably dust/dander also
the stream of evaporating sweat and moist breath left behind by bicyclists and joggers is contaminated. i dont want to see you anywhere outside with other people anywhere near you without a mask, full stop
wearing your mask under your nose = asshole
not wearing a mask within 12' of someone you dont live with = asshole
bitching about masks vs civil liberties = asshole
businesses and pub transit not enforcing masks = assholes
failing to intervene with your peers about masks = asshole
so it's cooties time. everyone you don't live with has cooties, including friends and family. shun the outsiders unless everyone is wearing masks at the very least, preferably also eye protection. dont touch people or share unsterilized objects. dont pull your mask down
when my mom started calling me from her cell phone while driving i told her i would hang up every time she did it until she stopped, and she did. safety education usually fails or takes a generation to kick in (anti-smoking campaigns). social consequences work faster and better
so it's time to start being a MASSIVE dickhead about this stuff, to everyone. it doesnt matter if they understand the germ theory of disease (they wont), what they understand is "i get inconvenienced more than is worth the fight i put up when i dont wear a mask".
this is a fundamental aspect of dog training. the dog pulls on the leash while walking, you dont hit the dog, you stop immediately or turn around and go backwards. you do this hundreds of times until the dog finally gets so sick of your shit it stops pulling.
no mask = you dont go anywhere. just like pulling on the leash = you dont go anywhere
i should add that wearing a mask doesnt mean social closeness is safe. not at all. the distances were measured and the results were "any distance is good, more distance is better". but virus bearing particulate can cross long distances without a mask so, mask always
a man in my mentions is arguing with me about my precise phrasing of WHO recommendations and if you were wondering if he has a huge beard and a silly hat in his icon, wonder no more
