There is no one set path to do anything, but here is early career advice I wish I had known! What am I missing?!
Ages 22-27: Maximize Learning. Ask 1,000 questions. Some of your peers will tease you for it, doesn't matter. You'll pass them up. Your goal is to learn what you don't know and start to get an idea of what excites you. Don't focus on salary or job title.
Ages 28-32: Start Honing In. Figure out an area that excites you. Go deeper. Your goal: start getting really good at your craft. Go to grad school to master a field or if you need a reset. Skills to hone: analytical and creative chops, management, managing up.
Ages 33-38: Kick Ass. Drive and lead big projects. Your goal: get really good and drive big impact. If you need a career reset, this is the time to do it. Skills to get hone: leading, influence, driving change, giving/receiving feedback.
All ages:
_It's a long game. Don't maximize for today, think years out.
_You can learn a lot from a bad manager, but after 6 months, it's not worth it anymore.
_Don't be an ass. You'll work with asses. Don't become one. Reputation matters, a lot.
_Ask 10+ questions everyday.
