In April, I slammed Frozen 2’s structure during a screencast, enraging my 7th graders/ apparently hardcore Disney fans. Debates ensued w/ students who defended that life, like Frozen 2, is full of messy side plots. #nctechat #2ndaryela #theconejoway
This summer, I have been metaphorically frozen trying to plan for a moving target that will undeniably change education for my Ss. As I sat one afternoon staring into the abyss, the universe sent me a sign: "Do the Next Right Thing" started playing on Spotify.
I had an epiphany: life IS full of messy side plots (murder hornets, anyone?) and I don’t have to figure it all out to do right by my Ss next year. I just have to do the next right thing. Here have been my next right things in my planning process:
(1) Decide w/ my dept colleagues @reads247 @JacquieMeir @KacyButcher on critical ELA standards that give us the most bang for our buck.
(2) Create overarching learning goals a lá @SarahMZerwin Point-less that combines those standards. https://bit.ly/3jrjoUL

(3) Go back to my Ss surveys & make a list of protocols they found most impactful. Figure out how to adapt them to remote learning. (Some experiences that made the cut: @montesyrie Smiles and Frowns, @instituteofplay Socratic Smackdown, @MarisaEThompson TQE)
(4) Attempt to plan a semester w/out a final calendar and dive into an LMS before PD. Realize both are time sucks for now & go back to the drawing board.
(5) Brainstorm the first three days with flexible instructional minutes, using @eduprotocols Smart Start as a base.

(6) Do the next right thing. I don’t know what that is yet, but I have faith that we'll figure it out for our students, one step at a time, in our own way.
