As a writer, I think about this. As much as TV/film is a reflection of society, TV/film also shapes society.
We spend hours and hours watching morally grey and dystopian content and still wonder why depression & drug use rates are accelerating.
Cynicism extracts a real cost. https://twitter.com/robkhenderson/status/1284929295023058949

There has to be a space for content that inspires you and causes you to dream good dreams.
Not just content that distils all the horrors of contemporary society directly into your frontal lobe.
Fantasy and sci fi books/shows of the 60s, 70s and 80s inspired a lot good dreams.

HBO’s “The Wire” was a masterclass in storytelling and I was blown away by it.
But I clearly also remember feeling overwhelming hopelessness and cynicism at the end of each season.
All I felt from the show was ‘everything decays’.
It was depressing as hell.

A show like Doctor Who on the other hand has given me some of my best collection of memories and impressions. Even the sad parts.
Of course it’s not in the same class of writing as the Wire but it’s shaped my world view in a way that’s far more beneficial to me.

There’s clearly a place for gritty and cynical stories, yes.
But it bears remembering that we will always be a sum of the things we consume.
A constantly dystopian diet will likely create a dystopian world with all its attendant miseries within your mind even if not in reality.
