Wanted to find out more about the UHVDC power lines. Just 3 of these could supply the current UK energy demand. The potential for huge scale renewables and moving power around the world is almost realisable. Solar farms in Spanish desserts and wind farms just off our coast?
We currently get half our electric power by burning gas while Denmark is 50% wind generation.
The most exciting concept would be east-west HVDC so solar power could be moved into different time zones for evening demand.
Will we have a super renewable generation and distribution grid? Technically we are almost there. Economically not yet there as we move huge quantities of coal oil and gas around the world. The political question is the most no way answer. Would we rely on some libian solar farm?
The world's fifth largest company that I expect you have never heard of. In the early 2000's China had many electric black-outs. One solution was to move electric power around this continent sized country from hydroelectric dams and coal areas to demand https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Grid_Corporation_of_China
Starting in 2009 China now moves 150GW of electric power long distances around their continental sized country. Impressive developments in a decade but it must speed up as electric demand is predicted to increase. It is worthwhile following the wiki links https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra-high-voltage_electricity_transmission_in_China
HVDC proposed for Shetland. I wonder how long it will take before they actually start building it,? https://twitter.com/ssencommunity/status/1284799895669321728
