The reaction from friends and acquaintances when they ask "what is your daughter studying?” is always amusing.
Art, she’s studying art.

They give me an empathetic look and some condolences.
It dawned on me that growing up, many family friends were artists and authors and they were financially secure.

When my kid was growing up a close friend’s dad was an artist, he had the most beautiful home(and nicest car)
Another friend of my kid was the grandson of an artist, his mom was living off the wealth her father had created as an artist.

It's just amusing that the idea " studying Art is a viable option" is the result of the rather specific environment she happened to be born into.
Then there's me her irresponsible mother who tells her " Do what you like, just cultivate one skill, learn to sell, start now, start selling now, get good at that and you'll do great"
I guess what I’m trying to say is that there must be incredible amounts of potential , academic, artistic, entrepreneurial potential out there but it takes such an unlikely alignments of luck for it to even stand a chance to manifest itself.
All political debates should really be trying to answer one question " How do we allow that potential to thrive"

I really don't know how we got from that to " Is mask wearing a form of oppression"
