While I totally get the financial burden the Government faces, the 'people have had enough time to come home now' narrative simply isn't right
Plenty of expats have only recently lost jobs and are now faced with packing up lives and *trying* to get home https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/300060637/coronavirus-government-considering-charging-returning-kiwis-3000-for-quarantine-stay-same-fee-as-national-proposed?cid=app-iPhone

There are plenty of people coming back into New Zealand who can afford to pay the $3000 for two weeks in a hotel, but what about those who can't?
Payment plans don't help the fact that people have already lost incomes/ livelihoods and are trying to start again at home

And then, being vilified by other Kiwis because of this commonly held view that any expat returning now has been frolicking about on a beach since March and are now only returning to leech off Mum/ Dad/ the government for a bit before we leave again
Wait for it... someone's gonna ask about tax and how much money we've been putting into NZ while away
Well, in my case, I lived 25 years in NZ paying tax, paid my student loan & own property and have never stopped paying tax on that. Plenty of my $ still goes into the NZ economy

Again, I'm not against paying some way towards quarantine. But this isn't a fancy 2-week stay in a hotel as people keep making it out to be. This is a necessary sacrifice of leave in order to see loved ones. One returnees would prefer not to do, but understand that they have to
It just means that for many of us, a trip home now really is looking more and more impossible - for God knows how long.
The thought of not knowing when I'll be able to see my parents again, cause I'll be faced with a $10k+ price tag (incl flights) when I do, is actually scary

Anyway, I dunno what the answer is. But the anti-expat rhetoric is what I have the problem with. I know many people who have been made redundant in the last month and in the UAE, you simply can't stay here without a job and have no other choice but to return home
I understand that means-based testing maybe isn't viable on this kind of scale - but it certainly seems to be the only way to sort the truly needy from those who have indeed just stayed overseas for too long, thinking they could continue on with their holiday
