New twitter handle @jeffyholliday! I've been meaning to change for awhile now, mainly because most of my account names for stuff are slight variations of each other and it bothers me that they're not all exactly the same, or all completely different. I like things tidy.
But since I'm retiring slimjinpyo I thought I should explain the origin, in case anyone was ever curious. When I started learning Korean 20 years ago my Korean friends said I should have a Korean name, and what we ended up with was 하진표 (Ha Jinpyo).
I wanted a name that had the same initials(?) as my English name Jeff (제프), which would be ㅈ ㅍ. There are not a lot of names that use those letters, but my friends gave me a few options to choose from, and I chose 진표 (Jinpyo). The surname Ha is just from Holliday.
I remember one friend said my surname should be 공 because Holliday is 공휴일

Of course, not many people actually use my Korean name, but it does come in handy sometimes, like when I am signing up for something and I need a name that is short enough to fit in the space allotted. Also some older people find it easier to remember and pronounce.
I do have a few Korean friends who prefer to call me Jinpyo, though, and they do so. And especially since I became a professor here, some people are really confused about what to call me, so my policy is that people can call me whatever they want.
I don't actually remember where the 'slim' part came from, but it was one of my Korean friends that came up with that. Could have been because I was so skinny back then (not so anymore...) But I liked the name slimjin, because it's like Slim Jim!
So slimjin was my http://battle.net name back when I used to play a lot of Starcraft (and again more recently, bc pandemic). When I joined Twitter I wanted that name but it wasn't available (although the current holder joined in 2014, so I might have just missed a window).
Also, when I joined twitter my account was anonymous, but a few years ago I made it more public and academic, and so it makes sense to just use something as close to my real name as is available.
There were about 20 other handles I would have liked more but they're all taken by someone who joined in like 2009 and has 3 followers and hasn't tweeted since 2010. So @jeffyholliday it is.
