My Review of Earl Sweatshirt's "Some Rap Songs" from 2018. I worked extra hard on this, so if you could read it, like it and RT that would be appreciated <3. This album is one that grows on you big time. The beats and mixing are unorthodox, seemingly underdone and odd, but (1/7)
that is all intentional. Give this one a bunch of spins, and at some point it should click for you. This album is a look into the life, mind, soul and relationships of Earl. It is a journey that begins with Earl drowning in his depression. The idea of drowning is a lyrical (2/7)
motif that shows up all across this album, along with the idea of Earl bleeding, and the idea of being stuck. All of these concepts give us insight into the life of Earl and what he goes through/has gone through. This also explains the mixing, at times Earl sounds like he (3/7)
drowning into the beat, just like the drowning Earl describes with his words. Earl's writing is next level on this one, so many poignant metaphors and complex bars that really help you understand Earl. As the album progresses we see Earl change, from drowning, to slowly (4/7)
maturing and growing as time goes on. He learns to establish a stronger support system and take better care of himself. He also works to cope with the loss of father, whom he had a complicated relationship with. I don't have the ability to explain all that goes on in this (5/7)
project here, so I will say this: 1) Read my song by song comments for better detail and clarity 2) This is some of the highest level artistry in rap to me because of the way he uses every part of the music/writing to convey the deep emotional weight that he lives with (6/7)
which makes this album so much more than "Some Rap Songs", but rather a beautiful portrait of a man.
