A crowd of protesters (200?) are at the North Portland police precinct. Currently on NE Emerson chanting “1 2 3 4 open up the prison doors; 5 6 7 8 abolish the police state.” Many people are wheeling bicycles with them.

Traffic is flowing regularly up and down NE MLK.
Crowd has migrated to the back of the precinct to chant “no good cops in a racist system” in the direction of the parking lot, where I believe a couple of officers were spotted.

Lots of press and ACLU observers mulling around between the crowd and the parking lot.
Seeing a LOT of helmets, goggles, and gas masks in the crowd. Protesters come prepared by day 51 (is that what we’re on?).

A protester points out officers peering out of these windows. Crowd boos and chants “together we are strong”
Crowd has been chanting “no cops, no prisons, total abolition” for a long time, in case you were wondering whether they would settle for reforms or defunding by a small percent 🙃
A protester just lowered the American flag flying outside the precinct. The entire crowd cheers.
Shout out to the person who sat down next to me and seemed worried that I was out here alone without gear.... and then 10 minutes was like “OH, You’re not out here alone; you’re Tuck Woodstock!”

Gonna put my gear on now so I don’t look like a lost child. 🤠
Crowd now chanting “we’re gonna break your union! Fuck PPA!”

Original tweet said “crowd now tweeting” which is extremely funny. It’s me and @45thabsurdist; we are crowd.
A new flag has been raised outside the precinct. I’m told it says “mourn the dead and fight like hell for the living” but it just looks like white canvas from here.
Protester has a sign that says “Black trans lives matter” but it deadnames Titi Gulley? I know that’s not the important thing here but as a trans person I am... very upset?
New chant in the direction of the parking lot, where at least one officer is standing: “Protect and serve, that’s a lie, you don’t care if people die.”
The remains of the lowered flag.
Someone got a way better photo of the new flag.

There’s a very quiet announcement from the LRAD about protesters interfering with PPB’s work and presumably needing to leave? Conveniently, the crowd is already moving north on MLK.
Crowd has stopped briefly on NE Killingsworth. Someone jokes we are stopped at the red light. Crowd now moving north again.

This is exactly where “hello, hello” happened, I just want you to know.
Small part of the crowd is chanting “whose streets? Chinook streets!” in reference to the Indigenous people whose land Portland occupies.
Big banner at the front of the march says “chad wolf listens to Nickelback.” Chad a Wolf is the acting secretary of DHS who claims that the protest is made of “violent anarchists.”
Crowd still heading north. No sign of uniformed officers as they march down NE MLK.

Taking this moment to make sure you know that there’s a second crew/protest downtown at the Justice Center! Follow @LindseyPSmith7 @DonovanFarley @PDocumentarians for updates.
Meanwhile, @45thabsurdist @hungrybowtie @MrOlmos @BlairStenvick @IwriteOK @PDXzane and others are also following this march! If you’re looking for more people to follow.

Also, @TheRealCoryElia will be downtown as well.
Crowd taking all lanes of MLK in both directions. Sign on the right says “Quanice Hayes was only 17 years old.” Hayes was shot and killed by Portland Police Bureau in 2017.
Crowd turning left/west on Lombard, towards the PPA (police union building).
A blue flag is flying at the very front of the march. It says “FREE RIOT RIBS” in red paint.

@riotribs is a collective of volunteers that provide free food, clothing, and supplies for folks who live downtown. They’ve repeatedly been arrested and had their supplies confiscated.
This video is intentionally of nothing, but you can hear the robust “Black trans lives matter chant.” Some folks are coming out of their houses to watch the march, and I heard at least one of them join the chant.
Oops I missed the quote mark on that one. You get it.
Crowd chants “out of your homes and into the streets!” A few folks come out to join the march, and the crowd cheers.
It’s been a long time since I marched this far at one of these protests. Like .... five or six weeks? Crowd has been chanting and cheering the entire 2+ mile walk. Spirits seem high. (Please ignore the black scribbles lol.)
The march is finally arriving at the PPA. Group is being led by some protesters wheeling a dumpster down the middle of Lombard. It’s a big march, maybe 500 folks?

The PPA is boarded up and looks abandoned. (not saying it IS abandoned.) the crowd almost passed it accidentally.
Protesters standing in the middle of Lombard, seemingly unsure of what to do. Someone is drumming.
A protester is handing out Heavenly donuts to the rest of the crowd. It’s weird that there have been so many protests that there are specific traditions/tropes at PPA demonstrations now, but there are, and this is one of them.
There are now dumpster barricades west of the PPA, as well as a line of bikes and cars further west at the traffic light. There are also dumpsters on NE Campbell, blocking cars from the south. To the east, the only barricade is a few cars in the street with hazard lights on.
Still no sign of law enforcement. Protesters are tagging the PPA building, which is 85% covered in plywood from the last protest a few days ago.
Protesters have removed the plywood from the front door the precinct. They’re now smashing at the door with the pole of an American flag.
LRAD is making an announcement but the new LRAD DJ has a really low voice and I can’t hear anything he is saying.
“We notice criminal activity occurring in the crowd. If you attempt to breach and enter the PPA office, you’ll be subject to arrest or use of force, including crowd control munitions. Stop criminal acts now and move to the east.”
I will say this.... there is actually criminal activity occurring in the crowd. As in, there’s a dumpster fire in the middle of Lombard and the door getting smashed. Meanwhile, vast majority of crowd is standing peacefully in the street.
I say this mostly because sometimes at these protests I have literally no idea why law enforcement is using force.
Y’all, there’s a fire inside the PPA.
PPA on fire. Riot declared. Sirens coming from the west. Crowd moving East. Hearing some kind of shots.
DJ LRAD telling crowd to move to the east. Someone is yelling, “i live on Lombard. This is my street.”
Forgot to mention that tear gas seemed to be used without warning? I didn’t get the canisters but the air was spicy and I got to use my gas mask.
Crowd bull rushed. I caught the end of the dispersal.
At least one arrest made. Crowd is splintered into groups and struggling to regroup on dark side streets.
Crowd has regrouped on Lombard and Interstate. LRAD appears and reminds the crowd that this has been declared a riot. “Move to the east now.”
Second bull rush. Protesters tackled. At least one bike confiscated.
I briefly took my gas mask off and the air is very spicy!!! Reminder that PPB can only legally use tear gas (which I can’t officially confirm they did) if they declare a riot, which they did.
Crowd is walking in the dark throw residential streets. A white family comes out of their house to offer masks, hand sanitizer, water, or a place to rest.

Sort of funny watching them offer paper masks to a bunch of folks in gas masks.
Crowd chanting “walk fast, don’t run.” People are starting to break into a jog and others are trying to slow them down.
Too dark to film but police have appeared and are pushing protesters really far into the neighborhoods. It’s super dark but they keep pushing people and yelling at them to run faster. It’s super hard to see all the obstacles in the road/sidewalk.
I got yelled at to move faster and pushed onto the sidewalk because I was “in the way” but it’s impossible to move quickly on Portland sidewalks in the dark
Everyone just chased into the highway. Then bull rushed again. This man was thrown to the ground multiple times and is now bleeding badly from multiple wounds on his face. He is dazed and clearly needs a medic but we are still moving away from police.
It was really hard to post for a while because everyone was being chased down very dark side streets, and then chased onto the highway bridge, and then chased off the highway bridge. Here’s being pushed onto the highway.
And we are... more or less accidentally ... back at Península Park, where most of these protesters started their evening. (They marched from Peninsula to the North Precinct and then to PPA.)
