I think in regards to Dynamite, what a creator has to ask themselves is "Will this company protect me from abuse and harassment while I am providing them with my services?" I think the company has shown by its recent actions that the answer is no.
Not only will Dynamite not provide creators with that protection--especially if said creator is from a marginalized group, they will use said creator's identity and oppression as cannon fodder for alt-right trolls.
If you can stomach that abuse? Cash the checks until they stop coming and move on. But understand that some readers will not purchase the books you create, and understand that your work may be used to needle those readers whose principles have led them to avoid said company.
And they will do so by slapping the art of an alt-right pundit who trolls black art hashtags and makes fun of AAVE on the cover of your comic.
It's odd that this is getting attention now since this practice isn't new. I made a mental note long ago to avoid the company in order to not deal with harassment or racist trolling.
It's a personal choice--either to purchase the company's books or work for them. For me, I don't feel safe dealing with a company that not only promotes and funds the alt-right, but does not even take steps to ensure that one freelancer does not exploit another.
The bare minimum protection that an entertainment company can provide to a freelancer is to ensure that they will not be forced to collaborate with someone who sees them as less than and who promotes their harassment due to their inherent traits.
However, I don't knock people who are under contract with them. One, they may have been unaware of company practices and two, people have bills! I just don't buy the books. As long as they don't subject me or others to bigots, we're good.
