As others have noted, Trump tried to co-opt the military as his own Praetorian Guard or SS. The military declined. He's now settled on using DHS agencies--which are far more receptive to the proposition. https://twitter.com/DrPhilGoff/status/1284481685942415360
The good news, at this point, is that the military has rebuffed Trump. That's by far the most important thing. He can only do so much damage without the military.
The bad news is that Democratic political leaders still aren't taking this seriously enough. Until they do, we're still at significant risk of allowing it to all slip away. Trump will keep crossing lines until someone pushes back.
