I have a unique perspective as a long-time Harpers reader, but I've also found other sources and arguments that support perspectives that might be different from the one you have in your blog post
The thread from Popehat works well when looking at the letter's problem from a defense of free speech perspective.

When l heard about the letter, I assumed it was in response to Richard Russo's essay in an earlier issue
He wrote a piece considering the ethics of having a character outside of his experience (ie a trans character) as a main character
