Further to my recent tweet on defining what we want from a ‘revised’ #Britain , I would like to contemplate with you some key aspects of common values for discussion: #Brexit
Thread.....1/15
2/ #Dignity.
All sides of the political battle and all levels of society have become accustomed to undermine others’ dignity as a sport. It has added to the level of debate we see in media and SM. It has fed racism. Human dignity is what we should respect in everyone without fail
3/ it is not hard to step back for a second and ask yourself if your actions respect a someone’s dignity. You can only earn respect if you do, even if you fundamentally disagree or even detest that person .... here’s your challenge.
4/ #Freedom
freedom of speech, freedom to live, think and move as you wish while respecting all fundamental values of a shared society should be at the heart of a functionning democracy. Yet freedom has been politicised.
5/ Loss of Freedom of Movement, intimidation of lecturers, gagging of press and industry leaders, whipping of politicians in a climate of fear. Freedom has become a commodity for the rich, administered by the rich.
6/ #Democracy
The two tier class system in the UK is a dinosaur that needs to be assigned to history. If education, access to work and public influence is reserved for the upper tier, there can be no true democracy. At all. We should no longer accept it.
7/ We should teach next generations that it is unacceptable and unnecessary.
Voting is the other main obstacle in this country. The FPTP system has to go. Each vote must count in full.
8/ Confidence in having their vote heard/counted will encourage citizens’ participation. Better access to education for all will give us better politicians representing a wider range of society.
9/ #Equality
We have been messing around with gradual - or should I say glacial - implementation of equality, particularly regarding women’s, LGBTQ and ethnic rights. We should signal that our patience is over. Rights must be enforced faster and better.
10/ #Law
The first rule of law is: nobody is above the law. Checks and balances must exist for the Government, citizens and courts themselves. Access to fair treatment under the law must be a fundamental right of every citizen. We should not use people as bargaining chips.
11/ The principle of innocence until proven guilty must be upheld. Every citizen should be given access to legal support. Watch the @BarristerSecret films and you understand how easily democracy can be undermined by restricting legal access.
12/ #HumanRights
Some publicity heavy, drawn out cases have been used to sell HR as a hindrance to action, undemocratic, even unpatriotic.
Few critics have stepped back to ask themselves how they might benefit from it being enshrined in law and agreed with international partners
13/ Human Rights encompass all previous points. They are as fundamental as our being alive. They are - and should be - above the rules of any single society. Because societies - even democracies - can get it wrong. There has to be a set of laws that no Government can touch.
14/ Because of this, our Government’s attempts of abolish the Human Rights Act are possibly the most horrendous and dangerous aspect of their attempts to dismantle #UK democracy.
15/ Now - some of you may have noticed- all the headers in above tweet are the #EUvalues. A good start, I’d say. #WATON
