Found a nice first printing of one of the best clench covers ever painted. The artist, Robert McGinnis, is better known for noir/thriller covers and James Bond poster art (see thread).
McGinnis is one of the most prolific paperback cover artists of all time. His elongated women are unmistakable once you start to recognize them. When She Was Bad can briefly be in in one of my favorite films, Who Killed Teddy Bear?
Sometimes his work is found in unexpected places, like the cover of lesbian classic Beebo Brinker, by Ann Bannon. His women are sexy but also powerful and complicated.
At 94, he is still working. His art has been used recently for Neil Gaiman reprints and on the covers of many Hard Case Crime novels. He is a living legend.
McGinnis’ art brings back the style, sleaze, and beauty of a recent past gone but not forgotten.
