ADHD, medication and self-esteem (thread)
[Sharing this 4 some healthy conv]
Many patients with ADHD would prefer that their school didn't know about their condition since it marks them out as 'different'.
An experience with a foster child truly opened my 👀to this.
After
multiple placement breakdowns (and assctd school changes😞), he found a foster carer who pursued a dx of ADHD. This happnd towards the end of his primary school yrs. In July of that yr, I started him on ADHD meds that last thruout the day.
'Do we HAVE2 tell the school?' he
asked. 'Not if you don't want to', I said.
Thru that summer, we optimised his dose for symptom control.
His behaviour became indistinguishable from other children of his age.

In September, he started secondary school.
We decided NOT to tell ANYONE other than Social Worker.
Now, secondary school had a THICK file on his beh. [assaults, running away, 'unteachable' etc]. They were expecting a little monster and had prepared for him to be excluded.
Within a few weeks of school starting, they were SURPRISED at his positive behaviour transformation.
(note: they didn't know of the meds)

He seemed to have turned a corner. He was polite, eager 2 pls, a quick learner and seemed to be soaring in school work.
His 1:1 TA exclaimed, 'I don't know why I am with you! You are a good lad.'
Guess, who took the credit for this change?
