My favorite @repjohnlewis story: the last few weeks of the 2012 Obama campaign I was deployed to Cincinnati and Dayton Ohio, two swing counties in the throes of early vote.
On the last day of early vote in Cincinnati the lines were long. Like four people deep and trailed for six blocks long. It was cold, and things weren't moving quickly.
Rep. Lewis showed up to help motivate folks to stay in line. We'd had other big names do drive bys - Sarah Jessica Parker had been there the week before, and Will. I. Am. showed up three hours late to do a quick radio hit from the voting line. But Rep. Lewis was different.
@repjohnlewis showed up and insisted on shaking the hand of Every. Single. Person. waiting in line to vote. That whole six block long four person deep line. Parents, children, everyone.
At one point his staff tried to gently nudge him toward leaving and he refused -- saying my friends and I got beaten, some of my friends died so these people could vote. He looked each person in the eye, told them how important their vote was, and thanked them for turning out.
Hours later the line was still really long, it was dark and getting COLD. People had been there for hours. But no one left. I remember one woman saying you bet your ass I'm staying in line. John Lewis and his friends got beaten up so I could vote. There's no way I'm walking away.
Thank you Rep. John Lewis. You were truly incredible. #RestInPower
