I don’t want to retweet the gruesome images, but Chicago Police punched an 18 yr old black girl, Miracle Boyd, in the face, knocking out her teeth, to protect a Columbus statue downtown from protesters. There are also horrible pictures of other bloody protesters

Everyone is honoring Rep John Lewis (RIP) for how he risked his life protesting and boldly faced brutal backlash at the hands of the police
It would seem that those same people would be rallying behind Miracle Boyd and company

People are calling to rename the Edmund Pettus Bridge in AL—named for a grand dragon of the KKK—after John Lewis, b/c they understand the importance of monuments & symbols
It would seem those same people would be rallying behind Blk/Indigenous-led protest of a Columbus statue

People love lionizing civil rights freedom fighters of the past, after they are dead. They are fine calling out racists, after they are dead & long gone
The same people cast current freedom fighters as uncivil, & will do anything to avoid naming current acts & systems of racism

In Chicago, the mayor has decided to ignore calls to remove a Columbus statue or end a holiday honoring Columbus. People have intensified their protests in order to be heard and have elected officials be responsive to their concerns
Chicago is a city where power is extremely concentrated in the office of the mayor. This is mechanically so. Democracy then requires direct action by the people to level the balance of power. One role of the police here, then, is to stave off that pressure
A call to #DefundThePolice could therefore be also seen as a push for a better functioning democratic process in cities like Chicago
I hope we get justice for Miriacle and the other protesters
