This is only like a half formed thought but it’s been eating away at my brain for a minute- I recall learning in school that Nazi’s defense that they were “just following orders” had no legal merit and didn’t absolve them of their actions but I don’t recall learning 1/5
HOW to not follow orders. In fact I think my entire school experience sums up to preparing me (or attempting to at least) follow orders without question or reservation. On a tangential note I recall my history teachers being unable to articulate the difference 2/5
Between “patriotism” and “nationalism”- I have an answer on that one now: it’s “us” and “them”. I guess what’s been bugging me is the massive psychological compartmentalization we indoctrinate into kids. 3/5
We teach them “this is wrong, except when it’s us doing it”. Hell, I’m not that old but when they taught us about Manifest Destiny it was tought as being good and noble. Anyway, I feel like what’s happening in the country right now is the disintegration of that 4/5
compartmentalization- and some people are realizing “oh neat I was a fascist all along” and others are coming to the conclusion “perhaps we should improve society somewhat?”
Anyway, no idea what the point was here, sorry for what amounts to dumdum 3am brain “wow man” shit. 5/6
Also if your boss orders you to go out and illegally detain protestors without identifying yourself and sweep them away in the night using a rented minivan, you should instead not do that. These are the orders you’re supposed to refuse. 6/6
