The second best thing about TDK is the conflict between batsy & Joker.
An unstoppable force met an immovable object and the whole world went bonkers.
Dialogues like "you and I are destined to do this forever" were just orgasmic stuff for batman fans.

Another good thing about TDK is, it had most realistic take on Superheroes.
Batman in TDK does fail to save both Rachel and Harvey dent at the same time. The action scenes in dk are also so grounded which helped the people to connect more with batsy.

The most important reason for Americans to connect with tdk is the way the events in the film reminded them of 9/11 twin towers attack. The people of gotham stood for each other in ferry scene. So if you observe it wasn't batman who proved joker wrong, it was the people.
