So I'm talking about Azula apparently today the needs for redemption storylines or in this case anti need. I don't think Azula should be redeemed or get that storyline but well I'm going to talk about the need for one. https://twitter.com/DanGuy96/status/1284351616213225474
First the practical, Avatar the last airbender already has that arc for you, it's just not with crazy girl you waifu or worship. Oh Wow you really need to get two storylines that do the same thing in one series that's really good writing there.
I go back to my biggest criticism of Dark Knight Rises is actually the fact that somehow Bruce goes through the same arc twice in the film. Bruce starts out broken get better and becomes Batman twice in one film and no one said isn't this redundant?
So that's a practical right there. Also Azula has another place as a character Zuko's shadow, a character who is there personal arch enemy and contrasts them. Like all you have to do is look at there face and see it. She was always loyal to DADDY.
But Azula is not meant to have that arc and I never really wanted it. For one she's her own character in the show and her issues and mistakes cost her everything. She's meant to show how easy it is for someone to fall into evil and tyranny.
She never questions anything the fire nation does and even says she's a monster. She's monster though who never mourns. Even her sad realtionship with her mom is driven not by her care for mom but HOW HER MOM SEE'S HER.
Also I have this question do you feel guilty for liking an evil character? Don't look at long as you don't try to justify everything they do it's fine. I've never had a problem with liking villains and you don't need them to be good I for one stan Lex Luthor.
But also I'm going to be really honest here, like women villains get the majority of redemption arcs across fiction anyway. Take the Major Batman female Batman rogues. Each of them has an arc where they are good guys and in Harley and Catwoman's case turned into anti heroes.
But back to Azula would you even like her as a good person? Like ask yourself what make Azula an actual fun character and maybe something more. Would she be as fun or as memorable? Would she be better?
Also I know we want to teach forgiveness, cool I'm with you .But I also always feel you have to teach the case where your ideals don't match with reality and accepting it. OH no the person we want to forgive won't let us? Well sometimes that happens and we move on.
But what about her positive traits? LIKE HER FRIENDSHIP, doesn't that warrant her redemption? Look honestly she treated her friends as conveniences most of the time and I know you want your cool girl squad fantasy but why do you think when we see Mai smile it's with Zuko?
Everything she does is kind of evil on some level, but you might not notice because she's entertaining. If there is one problem with people sometimes we often confuse liking a cool character with thinking they are good. Not like Doctor Doom the true hero of the Marvel Universe.
But Azula is just a well done villain that shows everything wrong with the Fire Nation, if you like her guess what, you might see how the fire nation has charisma, charm and why they took over so much. Like seriously she's also powerful. She's basically Fire Nation propaganda.
but here's another factor it's not like ATLA is lacking female characters and she is the only one in the show. Like at all. Man we really need the only real evil female villain to become a good guy this a real sausage fest you know.
Man it's not like Ty Le and Mai leave Azula in the finale, nope we need all the females to becomes good guys because we are missing bingo here. Yup everyone. Avatar the last airbender clearly has too many evil female characters and we have to have that arc.
But here's the thing, she is okay who she is. She says so herself, there is no reason for her to become a better person or really any good progression that wouldn't take a direct sequel to make it work. If you already think your gone what brings you out you know?
also if YOU REALLY need to have this arc let me recommend a 90's cgi robot show. It has this and a SHAKESPEAREAN DINOSAUR!
Look it's fine to have evil characters, and I don't need each and everyone to get that art because to me running into that wall and accepting that people are just like that...now this is a part where I compare her to Catra, because this is a thing.
now...let...me pretend she is a good...nope can't do it. Catra is shit and Azula is 10 times better. Why would anyone want Azula to be like Catra?
Like Seriously I think the only reason to like Catra is maybe is her design and voice work. I can see that. But she is like a frankensteing of Zuko and Azula without understanding why they work and how to get each bit right.
happy ending where everyone lives and like each other great! But don't bullshit me with bad writing to justify it and try to set it up ATLA as a show, knew what to focus on and get to the point. It doesn't try to have it cake and eat it. Okay there is that bit with spirit bending
But I always say this would Azula be as memorable a character if she got redeemed? Would we not be discussing her and what her motives are? Characters have to be compelling first, and guess what sometimes characters are just better as villains.
