You know, there are a lot of things I don't get about the UK housing market - it's unbelievable cruelty being one - but the thing that astounds me is how short sighted and selfish it all is - even for capitalism...
Almost all the problems capitalists worry about can be solved by fixing the housing market.
People don't stay at jobs for very long? Aren't shopping locally? Don't make big purchases? Don't want kids?
Could that be because they have keep moving between unstable rental properties?

What on earth did they think was going to happen when they forced multiple generations to either stay living with their parents, or live in unsafe and unstable shared housing?
Of course people won't be able to live the "standard life trajectory" that's a capitalist's wet dream.

The proliferation of unstable rental properties is also part of the reason communities are dying. How can people be expected to put down roots or engage with things locally when they have to move every year? When they could be evicted with six months notice? It's ridiculous.
A safe, secure, and stable place to live is not just the foundation of a safe, secure, and stable life for the person living there, but the foundation of a community, and of a society.
The promise of such a thing should be the bedrock on which every nation stands.
