Myth: "NZ is a low wage economy."

NZ has the 2nd highest minimum wage in the Western world. What NZ has is wealth inequality.

Namely, housing. Between those who own their homes, and those who rent.

And where is this cost of inequality paid? Out of wages into rents.
Let's recap.

The inequality exists between those who own & live in their own homes, and those who don't.

The inequality is not between renters & landlords. It's between renters and owner-occupiers. Landlords are stuck in the middle.

Our urban planning is a constraint.
Who opposes more liberal housing developments? NIMBY lobby groups.

NIMBY lobby groups represent homeowner societies.

We need to change our home ownership culture, and give renters stronger rights for lifelong renting.
If we decrease this one very large cost in our society, we will all reap the benefits.

Higher expendable incomes across a very wide base of the populace. Improving household income distribution & expenditure.

That means more money for things other than housing costs.
How can we do it?

Bring down the cost of housing 👇

Tiny annual tax on housing equity to shift culture towards building houses, not blocking them.

Use it to fund a UBI, remove the welfare trap & enable economic liberty, boost incomes of the working poor
What's the end result for the average household?

That largely depends on the distribution of your household income & household wealth. https://ubi.top.org.nz
"NZ has a relatively low average wage relative to the OECD"

This is true, but that's not due to some concerted effort to suppress wages, it's due to low productivity. https://twitter.com/AdamPaarsons/status/1284437979302252546?s=19
