Got this photo of Shahrah-e-Faisal around Laal Kothi yesterday. This has been happening frequently. Met my mamooo today who was deputy mayor under Naimatullah. Acc to him, the city’s current drainage capacity is ~ 25mm of rain, depleted further when nallahs aren’t cleared.
So ofc, when it rains anything more than that, streets and neighbourhoods will flood. Yesterday was between 40 - 60mm, all within a couple of hours. The water drained from major roads, without much intervention, in 3/4 hours by the time I drove back home.
As a resident, I want to know more about the city’s drainage capacity and patterns. And you should too. Orangi Pilot Project, Perween Rehman & Arif Hasan all worked on this, but few ppl care. @Mahim_Maher shares this work routinely. We need to understand so we can ask the govt.
Until then, here’s a suggested rule of thumb. If the rain falls fast and hard, don’t leave work/home. Leave the streets’ limited capacity for essential workers, public transport, and folks who need to get home urgently. Stay where you are. That water will drain in a few hours.
By no means am I suggesting that all is well and that this city isn’t a hell hole. People’s homes and shops get flooded with sewage water. This needs to be fixed!

Just giving you a heads up of what happens to the rich after floods if we don’t fix it 👀
