Mata Sati was the daughter of King Daksh. She performed severe penance and wished to marry Lord Shiva. Eventually she married Lord Shiva against the wishes of Her father Daksh.

Once Daksh was performing a yagna and he had invited all the deities except Lord Shiva and Sati.
Sati decided to go to Her father's yagna anyway.Lord Shiva advised Sati not to attend the function but Sati pleaded to go,thinking that it was Her father after all & he would welcome Her.

Sati arrived at Daksh's palace. When Daksh saw Sati,he began to insult Her and Lord Shiva.
Shiva.Sati didn't mind Her father insulting Her, but She was unable to hear bad words for Her Lord. She jumped in the sacred Yagna and hence the Yagna was desecrated. When Lord Shiva heard of this unfortunate incident, He was furious and attained the form of Veerbhadra and ...
tore off Daksh's head and tossed it in the same sacrificial fire. In order to complete the Yagna, a goats head was attached to Daksh's body. After this incident, Daksh spent his remaining years as a devotee of Lord Shiva...
Lord Shiva began wandering sadly, carrying Sati's body with Him. He started d dance of destruction. The whole world ws on d verge of destruction. To save d world & in order to break Lord Shiva's attachment, Lord Vishnu flung His Sudarshan Chakra & cut Sati's body into many pieces
51 pieces from Mata Sati's body fell at 51 different places which are known as Shakti Peethas. It's believed that if one goes and prays with utmost devotion at these Shaktipeethas, all their wishes are fulfilled.
