1/ Okay, so the scripting #YouTube videos question has come up a few times in the last few weeks and I fully script mine with a teleprompter and a few people have asked why and how it works.

So here goes.

2/ For a long while I did the rough bullet outline but what I actually said wasn't scripted.

That worked fine but I noticed the videos I really liked had denser storytelling, structure, info density and less rambling.

How did they do that?

3/ When asked, almost all of them fully scripted and almost all those speaking to camera used a teleprompter. Those doing video essays had the advantage of just reading.

A few could just crazily remember what they wrote!

4/ The 1st advantage of the teleprompter for me is it shifts where the time is spent. The majority of the time on a 'studio' video is now spent writing the script.

The main advantage of this is I can do that any where and any when.

5/ The 2nd advantage is I like writing. I view it as a strength. Process is therapeutic. So when something is written it is a strength for me.

6/ The 3rd advantage is it seems I can read naturally, insert random thoughts and pick up the reading without people really noticing.

This works better for me than bullet points.

8/ The 5th advantage is it changes both the information density and the emotion of the content as I can invest it in the writing and, I believe, impart it in the retelling. *cross fingers*.
9/ The 6th advantage is it keeps me looking directly down the lense at the viewer. No looking away, directly as if speaking intently to a person.
10/ Disadvantages? Yeah, I've become more critical of my travel adventure vlogs because they don't have the teleprompter and I worry I ramble / talking too much.

So it does shift your mindset.

11/ The short answer is it works for me and the type of videos I am slowly transitioning to that work creatively for me.

Which is what it's all about at the end of the day.

12/ The teleprompter I use is the Parot Teleprompter. It just attach to the thread on the front of your lens and uses your phone. I also use the remote to start / stop the script mid-flow.

And that's it.
