I was inspired to do a little bit of research this morning into the etymology of the names "Hougang" and "Sengkang".
Both were old fishing villages along the banks of Sungei Serangoon.

Hougang (" back harbour" or "后港") is upstream near the source and Sengkang ("prosperous harbour" or "盛港") is much further downstream - hence also Kangkar ("港脚" which means port at the foot of the river) which was the old name for the Sengkang area.

It's taken almost 30 years for the blue waters of Sungei Serangoon to flow from Hougang to Sengkang.
This poetic thought led me to do a little bit more research about another river called Sungei Bedok.

Interestingly, the source of Sungei Bedok is near Bedok Reservoir, and actually sits in Aljunied GRC.
Sungei Bedok is now a closed waterway, but the river red to flow towards Simpang Bedok to the Singapore Straits, through what is mostly today's East Coast GRC.
