Sometimes I feel this way towards publishers. If you didn’t want me in my lowest, why would I let you take me in my highest? I’ve read about many Artists and how no one would give them a 2nd thought and 1 person took a chance on them and they became Fan favorites.
I’m not saying this about all publishers or Editors. I just wonder how many fantastic Artists were passed on by an Editor or publisher(s) because they didn’t see potential and yet these could have easily been the next Jim Lee or Todd Mcfarlane.
And not saying I have the potential to become that great. I don’t think that highly of myself. I have yet a lot to learn. But imagine if no one took a chance on Mignola in his early days. Or Frank Miller. Would Jack Kirby get work in this current comic environment if he was new?
This is why I think this way. If you didn’t want me when I was young and eager and ready and capable, why would I even consider you when I’ve fought hard to build myself up on my own? I also get it’s a money thing but the root of all evil is the love of money.
Don’t mean to sound cynical here. I guess what I’m trying to say is it would be nice if publishers took a little bit of more chance. The comics world would be different than what it currently is.
But at the same time you don’t need a publisher or big name company to back you up. Other Creators have proven this. Just go and make your stuff with love and put it out there. It’s all you can do. And don’t turn them down if they come knocking.
But don’t let the idea that if you’re turned away by publishers it means your work is horrible or it has no potential. Maybe they’ve turned you away because your drawing skills are not there yet. Or your story needs a bit more. Sometimes they do it for all the right reasons
