i understand not wanting people to see yoongi as a cold or mean person but i also wish readers would allow writers to characterize their characters to be different from how bts are irl because it’s fiction and writing the same characterization gets REALLY boring
there’s a difference between a writer actually believing a bts member is one way and just wanting to write someone in a specific context and characterization because it’s a story and they don’t want to write soft things all the time
of course yoongi isn’t cold and mean. of course namjoon isn’t just clumsy. of course seokjin doesn’t just cook. etc etc. but i genuinely get scared of writing namjoon tripping over something or seokjin mentioning food because readers on twitter are so mean about it.
assuming a writer actually thinks yoongi is cold and mean because they write him as a tsundere or whatever is honestly insulting. 95% of writers are smarter than that and just want to characterize someone the way they want. and why is that such a horrible thing?
saying it’s fic writers’ fault for changing perception of yoongi is also ridiculous. if you as a reader cannot read a FICTIONAL story without allowing it to affect how you see REAL people that is on YOU and not the writer.
when you tell writers to stop writing bts members a certain way you’re essentially telling them to stop being creative with characterization, background of a character, and even plot.
if they ONLY write a bts member one way in all of their fics it could be a problem and COULD reflect real life views. but reading one fic from someone where they write yoongi as rough around the edges and complaining really irks me.
obviously making his character that one thing without rounding him out is kind of just flat characterization to begin with but writing him as a character with flaws where one of those flaws may be snapping at people when he’s grumpy shouldn’t be a bad thing.
because yes, yoongi irl is soft and gentle and caring and loving but he’s also got flaws too. we don’t see them very often because he’s a public figure who is presenting a version of himself to us. but it’s also flat characterization to ONLY make him soft all the time.
you by no means have to enjoy these grittier characterizations of bts and you don’t have to read those fics. but i assure you there are many more fics with yoongi (and the others) with characterizations you do like.
i implore you to seek out fics with chatacterizations you enjoy. the same goes for plots, sexual dynamics, kinks, ships etc etc. if you don’t like it just don’t read it.
but i will tell you that constantly seeing complaints about characterization GREATLY discourages writers from branching out, trying new things, and writing creative stories that feature the bts members in far from canon situations.
no, real yoongi is not his hyyh character. but the yoongi in fics is not the real yoongi either. you may not like fics where they’re criminals, villains, terrible people etc. that is totally fair and valid. but that doesn’t mean the writer sees them as those things
and it also doesn’t mean writers shouldn’t be able to write them as those things. i have written over 100 yoonkook fics. if yoonkook had the exact same characterization in all of them imagine how tired i would be.
and if you are a writer or reader who enjoys writing and reading similar characterizations all the time, there’s nothing wrong with that. but trying to shame writers who do things different is discouraging and quite frankly just rude.
i love soft yoongi and i love writing soft yoongi which is why he’s characterized that way in many of my fics. but fic writing is currently the only writing i do so when i want to write a story about terrible people... it’s gonna be bts.
of course i don’t actually see bts as terrible people. but you cannot put the blame on me if you read my fic where yoonkook are essentially serial killers and then think yoonkook are serial killers irl.
and yes, fiction can affect reality. we’ve seen that in real ways like with how jaws essentially caused the mass fear of sharks society has. but fics that get a few thousand hits cannot be blamed for swaying the opinion of fandom.
you as a content consumer and a fan are constantly supplied with real evidence of bts being lovely, supportive, amazing people. if you are reading a fic that goes against this and choose to believe the fic’s characterization over REAL EVIDENCE, i don’t know what to tell you.
this issue comes up time and time again and normally i just look away because in the end it makes no real difference to me personally but i think about myself as a new fic writer wanting to branch out and seeing the tweets people make... i really would have stopped writing.
like i said you don’t have to like when people write bts a certain way, you don’t have to read those characterizations, but please stop blaming writers for things they didn’t do and stop trying to shame writers into only writing one thing.
my creative writing prof once said that just because you don’t like what someone wrote, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have been able to write it. the gatekeeping of content creators in this fandom is very discouraging even for someone who genuinely doesn’t care.
i’ve seen complaints about characterization, plots, sex dynamics, ships, setting—you name it. there is something valid in every criticism but at the same time, my fucking god, just let writers write, particularly if they’re a new writer and getting a handle on their own style.
it’s called fiction for a reason. the real boys are right in front of you and they are the proof that bts are kind and wonderful people. i agree that they are and i love them dearly. but sometimes i just wanna write some not-soft shit and that shouldn’t be condemned on principle.
