Mikel Arteta sees a central midfielder as a priority, with Atletico Madrid's Thomas Partey his top target. He would also like to add another centre-back & an attacking midfielder before the start of next season. ( @goal)
Thomas Partey has a €50m release clause, but that would need to be paid with a vast amount up front. Arsenal have instead been looking at potentially spreading the cost over the duration of his contract, just as they did with Nicolas Pepe's signing last summer. ( @DeanJonesBR)
Alexandre Lacazette, Matteo Guendouzi, Shkodran Mustafi, Mesut Ozil & Ainsley Maitland-Niles will all become available for transfer in the coming weeks as Arsenal look to rebuild. ( @DeanJonesBR)
Philippe Coutinho looks set to leave Barça and join Arsenal on loan. ( @sport)
Mikel Arteta: "I am very ambitious because I can only think about this football club moving in one direction, & I’m going to push with everything I have"
Arteta on transfers: "We don’t know exactly what is going to happen or what we are going to be able to do, or not to do, to keep players or not to keep. It will depend a lot on what we do on the pitch in the next 3 or 4 games. That is in our hands so we have to maximise that"
Mikel Arteta: “There are many different aspects, obviously the financial one depending on where we finish [in the league], what happens in the future with a few players and also it depends on the transfer market.”
Mikel Arteta: “One is financially and the other one is because we do not know if we are in Europe, and because we have players that we don't know what's going to happen.”
Mikel Arteta: “Everybody [Kroenke’s] has the same ambition, we are in all of this together. If you ask me if I know right now what do I have and how can I do it, I don't know because there are a lot of questions that we can not resolve right now with the situation we have.”
Mikel Arteta: “That's the reality. It's not about sending a message, we all have the same objective which is to try to bring the club back as quickly as possible, fighting with the top teams in the country and in Europe, and I want to do that as quickly as possible.”
Mikel Arteta on Aubameyang: “I've always been very positive about it [signing a deal]. I don't have the key to the future and in football, anything is possible. But I see his reactions, I see how he is training every day. I know that he's happy.”
Mikel Arteta on Lacazette: “I really like Alex, I said that even before I joined here that he is the type of striker that I really like. I think he had periods where he was very unlucky, because he was having the chances & not converting them which he is not used to.”
Arteta on Lacazette: “But the way he can link play, he’s a massive competitor, he hates to lose. He goes for every ball, you see in every challenge how he’s ready to go. He works really hard & he’s a very intelligent player, I am really happy with him.”
Arteta on not wanting to lose Lacazette: “Why would I want to lose a player like him? I’m really happy with him.”
Mikel Arteta on Dani Ceballos staying at Arsenal: “Well, that’s a conversation that we’re having with the club to see what we can do in the future with him, but I’m really, really happy with his progress & how much he’s improving & giving to the club.”
Mikel Arteta on why he’s leaving Ozil and Guendouzi out: “Pure football reasons. My decision is always that. My only ambition is to put the best squad that give the best balance in and out of the field and the best possible chance to win the game.”
Arteta on why Arsenal are not yet producing the “tiki taka” style that City play: "You are asking me if I wanted to play, after a 2 month break, like City right now? Look back on the issues we had with a lot of players, with all the injuries, with suspensions, with players out"
Mikel Arteta on his game plan vs Manchester City: “It’s about stopping their strengths. They have a lot. It's part of any gameplan. It's not about City, it's about any other opponent we are facing. Tomorrow we will do exactly the same.”
Mikel Arteta: “We cannot expect to be dominant for 90 minutes and I don't want to be defending deep for 90 minutes. There are going to be a lot of little games that we have to play really good.”
Mikel Arteta on the FA Cup being a route into Europe: “Absolutely, for many different reasons but as well because this competition is a big part of our history and in the last 10 years even more.”
Mikel Arteta: “It's a great opportunity for us to go and win a trophy. We are very excited and will try to go there tomorrow and make another step forward.”
Pep Guardiola on Mikel Arteta: "If he can be supported by the club with investment, get the players they need, they can be contenders for the next years. I’ve a feeling he is creating something unique. If they give him what he needs they will be a contender in future years"
Alexandre Lacazette on Aubameyang: “He is already one of the legends [at Arsenal] because of the amount of goals he’s scored in so few games.”
