About 2 years ago, Ktown for All held a vigil for Joe Reyes, an unhoused friend who'd died. At the vigil, I met @nithyavraman from SELAH. She gave me a call to explain how she had worked at city hall and felt the same frustrations we did about the lack of action and resources.
She had helped launch an organization of neighborhood volunteers and passed along some tips about the kind of resources we could collect for our neighbors, about outreach. She explained how neighborhood councils could be effective. She connected me to other advocates.
She freely gave her time, advice, and experience to a fledgling group simply because she wants things to be better. It's the same way she runs her campaign. There's no candidate or elected official in LA doing the expert policy work she is churning out, free for the taking.
She doesn't have to run away from her past or her donors. She'll read bills before voting. I can't vote for Nithya. But if you live in CD4, ask yourself if you want to elect someone with the vision, intelligence, compassion and drive to truly transform LA for the better.
