I want to have a quick but honest conversation about asking POC to perform free intellectual labor. We are not simply happy to be invited to the convo. We create the convo. We aren’t impressed with an offer to sit at the table; we know the table is incomplete without us.
We aren’t showing up at meetings 2 demonstrate our worth. We know our worth. Your job is 2 demonstrate you’re wise enough 2recognize what we bring 2the table and offer compensation that reflects that. You can’t pick our brain for coffee. You can book a consultation for a fee.
For those approached by companies asking to “pick your brain” let me give you free tips. Update your website and add consultant to your list of titles. List areas you consult on. When a company approaches you with “can we run these ideas by you” I suggest pivoting.
You can redirect by saying something like oh I actually have room in my schedule to book you for at least 3 sessions, but if you’re serious about this issue I can send you my retainer contract.
You can also redirect the convo from “let me pick your brain” by saying something like I’m impressed that your company is prioritizing this issue, what’s your consultation budget?
