NEWS: According to leaked text of the proposed anti-trans HUD rule, homeless shelters will be allowed to judge women’s appearances in order to weed out trans women. https://www.vox.com/identities/2020/7/17/21328708/proposed-anti-trans-rule-homeless-shelters-judge-women
The rule text proposes that shelters pick out women based on height, facial hair, or Adam’s apple to ask for further proof of their assigned sex at birth. https://www.vox.com/identities/2020/7/17/21328708/proposed-anti-trans-rule-homeless-shelters-judge-women
Shelters would not be allowed to conduct genital checks, but could require women to prove their “biological sex” in some other way, like with a birth certificate or ID. Though lack of ID cannot be a basis for denial. https://www.vox.com/identities/2020/7/17/21328708/proposed-anti-trans-rule-homeless-shelters-judge-women
Once the rule hits the Federal Register, the public will have 60 days to comment. One question HUD asks is essentially how to spot a trans person, asking which physical features shelters can base judgements on. https://www.vox.com/identities/2020/7/17/21328708/proposed-anti-trans-rule-homeless-shelters-judge-women
HUD Secretary Ben Carson replied to a June letter from @RepWexton about the proposed rule, fretting about cis men pretending to be trans women to gain access to women’s shelters. https://www.vox.com/identities/2020/7/17/21328708/proposed-anti-trans-rule-homeless-shelters-judge-women
“The Secretary has made one bad faith argument after another to try and push this anti-trans rule forward, and the weak justifications he makes in this letter are no different.“ - @RepWexton https://www.vox.com/identities/2020/7/17/21328708/proposed-anti-trans-rule-homeless-shelters-judge-women
