I’ve been on a lot of text threads with females in sports over the last 24 hours. Beyond refraining from sexual harrassment, here are some things you can do to be an ally:

THREAD:
Please stop telling only women to smile.

Please give your female interns similar opportunities as male interns.

Please recognize your bias when you may see a male candidate as more relatable or more of your vibe. Difference is very powerful :)
Please don’t assume a female has some type of inappropriate relationship with an athlete if they greet one another in the hallway. It’s possible to be polite, even friendly, with all coworkers, not just the ones that are our same.
Please don’t police women’s outfits. It’s harder than you think to be professional enough for the business side, casual enough for the sports side, cool enough for the 85° event, and also accepted by old school standards of amount of skin showing or tightness of clothes.
P L E A S E remember women are as big of fans of sports as you and therefore want to discuss yesterdays game, too 😊

Please keep an eye out for times a woman’s work is represented by someone else, and if you have the power to credit her, please do.
Please don’t ask only females to fix the printer, help you with your office supplies, etc. It’s not that women aren’t willing to help, but that they notice when they are the only ones being pulled from their work to help solve those tasks.
Please remember that sometimes being an ally is as simple as noticing a female in a male-dominated situation and saying, “Hey, if anyone tries to push you around, tell me and I’ve got your back.”

⬆️ this specifically was done by so many incredible men I’ve worked with
Please remember that every woman’s experience is different. Some women have incredible, positive experiences. Some women have great experiences with a few bad moments. Others are exposed to trauma a lot. What one says does not apply to all.
Please remember that women who are also BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color), LGBTQ+, disabled, etc face LAYERS of overt & microaggressions, even sometimes from white-presenting women. (See: intersectionality).

Knowning those women are facing multiple barriers is important:)
Maybe most important: please don’t operate out of fear of a woman complaining.

At the end of the day, we just want to do our jobs well. We want to work with you and do dope shit.

Refrain from harrassment, listen, step in if needed & that will go SO far. 🙏🏻
I have specifically experience men - incredibly intelligent, talented, powerful men - who have been amazing allies. They have championed me, protected me, empowered me and consistently had my back.

Be one of them to the next female you believe in. It will change the game 🤍
Tagging a few women of influence in this thread who have always been vocally supportive of women in sports in case you want to be inspired :)
