Let's talk about meditation!

AKA meditation isn't just sitting still clearing your mind:

A lot of #ADHD'ers (and a lotta people generally) think that meditation isn't for them, or that it's something they can't do. This is because they were told mediation is sitting still, being quiet, and clearing your mind

That isn't the case at all! /2
That is definitely one type of meditation, but meditation is just any focused state that brings stability and emotional calm. There's nothing stopping meditation from being active

Meditation can also be a walk in nature, a swim, practicing martial arts, or drawing/colouring /3
In fact, a lot of people report that repetitive tasks, such as organizing lego, are quite relaxing and meditative.

This can be meditation too! /4
"But what about mindfulness!?" I hear you say

Mindfulness refers to paying attention to your body, thoughts, and feelings in particular. It can be part of meditation, but it doesn't have to be.

Also mindfulness can happen without meditation at all /5
I repeat:

Meditation does not equal mindfulness &
mindfulness does not equal meditation!

/6
Since what is needed for meditation is 1) focused attention that 2) results in stable emotional calm

Some things that might help those who struggle to regulate attention, life me, are 1) repetitive tasks associated with a strong interest 2) verbal guidance or 3) adding music /7
Apps like headspace can help you meditate, but they aren't necessary

Most importantly, though, keep trying!

Meditating for even a minute or two at first can be challenging, but with practice it does get easier! The more you do it, the easier it becomes /8
Interestingly, yoga is prolly one of the most common forms of meditation and most people don't even notice! Yoga involves movement, guidance, & maybe music, and many folks find it focusing & calming

So, dont force yourself to be still & quiet. Meditate the way your brain works😁
