Pictured: Number of podcasts in each language by year created. Looks like 2020 might finally be the year that non-English podcasts finally start exceeding the English podcast growth rate! @Podnews @ChartableDotCom @StephenWilson @hotpodmedia
Wow, this is actually a shocking change. Last year, only 26% of new podcasts were in non-English languages. This year, it's 45%!
In the months of April through June, new Non-English podcasts actually surpassed English podcasts for the first time! This really overturns a lot of assumptions about industry trends. @chris_peterson
Absolutely fascinating fascinating boom in Indonesian podcasts. Such a sudden steep rise that I triple-checked this in a few different ways, but it holds up.
It's actually a pretty similar trend to Portuguese podcasts, but Portuguese started rising years earlier. It's not inherently surprising -- Indonesia and Brazil are huge countries with populations in the 200m bracket -- but why are both blowing up now?
Meanwhile, French numbers continue to look absolutely anemic by comparison. It's a series of staggered plateaus.
Let's look at a different view: looking at just Spanish, French, Indonesian, and Portuguese podcasts created each year, what percentage are in each language? French shrinks dramatically.
