IDK anyone in DC who bought a house in the last 10 years without family support (including parents paying for college so fewer loans, or living with parents rent free), unless they used a first time homebuyer’s program or program like NACA (which we used). how did you buy in DC?
I just wish folks would be honest about this as we talk about economic access. Most people aren’t telling y’all that their parents helped them with the down payment, or they got a large sum of money from a family member, or a trust, and it reinforces the idea of bootstraps.
honestly, homeownership was not a life goal—all housing should be public and free, but I was tired of paying other people’s rent to feel unwelcome in their space, but had no access to generational wealth or family support, didn’t have perfect credit + massive student loan debt.
people should be more honest about the homebuying process for folks who are interested. and be transparent about the economic access you got. look, our families didn’t even buy us a housewarming gift. not a plant, not a blender. ain’t no way they had down payment money.

homeownership in DC (and the DMV in general) is largely inaccessible to DC natives and longtime DC residents unless you started with a home that was passed down and even then, with the rise in home values and taxes many can’t afford to stay in their homes.
anyway, homeownership is a trap, renting is also a trap, credit is a trap, college is a trap, I want free and dignified public housing for all or else we’re just gonna move off the grid and live in a tiny house somewhere because I’m sick of it. but if you want to buy, NACA is
!
