TW: #FEMICIDE
As August approaches; organizations, producers and artists alike will align themselves as allies against the femicide in South Africa whilst centering themselves in the narrative.
For a month, they will condemn the govt’s failure to bring an end to the femicide.

In the name of womxn, they will make a profit & donate some coins to good causes.
People will support these performances of allyship and when September comes around, the focus will shift to Heritage month and we will all kumbaya & braai together (whilst “socially distancing”.)

For 11 months, there will mostly be silence and the femicide will continue. An odd outrage here and there but if it’s not going to bring them a profit then there will be silence.
Every year we “support” by sparing some coins, sharing YouTube videos from our fave influencers, supporting artists and organizations that have consistently shown us they don’t walk the talk.
We buy into the capitalism of it all, subconsciously knowing these people are capitalizing on the murders & rape of womxn to meet their profit margins and increase their likes, views and subscriber count.
Our support then becomes us acknowledging that this femicide is happening but not actually doing anything about it because it’s uncomfortable to face that reality every single day. Meanwhile, womxn in South Africa don’t ever have that privilege.
I don’t have the solutions but I know that what we have been doing up until now is insufficient.
Silence and only speaking out about the femicide when it suits your business and your pocket is being complicit in the system that fuels it.
